Our Story
Two surfers with a common obsession – love of the ocean, surfing and travel, formed Saltwater Surf Travel. Having travelled extensively in search of waves through South America, Asia and the South Pacific, we continued to explore the globe chasing new surfing opportunities.
Jumping on a small local boat in the mid 1990’s, we headed south through The Maldives, surfing many empty classic waves. No names, no surf forecast in those days, just the pursuit of pure surfing happiness. We were eventually drawn back to The Maldives as the ultimate venue to focus our combined surf travel industry experience.

Our Maldives surf trips are customised to suit the individual needs each group. No generic laps around the atolls. We operate to a flexible schedule. Saltwater chases the best possible waves based on constant assessments of surf forecasts, sourced on multiple forecasting media. This flexibility is only part of the unique picture of a Saltwater Maldives surf trip. In collaboration with our local contacts, we have searched out breaks that are away from the well worn surf charter routes. Unique breaks that light up under particular conditions. We will always strive to surf these places, avoiding the main highway in favour of the lesser known trail.
Our guides are local Maldivians only – their knowledge and understanding of the atolls of The Maldives is unsurpassed – local expertise combined with our extensive experience and research.

We only use local Maldivian guides, their innate knowledge and understanding of surfing these waters is unsurpassed. Their knowledge, combined with our extensive research and experience, provides the perfect combination to put surfers in the right place at the right time. Our goal is to work with the people of The Maldives, in co-operation and for mutual benefit.
Treasures
These waters still hold treasures for surfers. So many world class set ups, as well as unique waves that light up under particular conditions. We will always use our extensive knowledge to lead our guests to the best possible breaks, always aiming to surf by ourselves whenever the conditions permit. We don’t list the well-known setups, there is plenty of information available elsewhere, it is the breaks without names that can make the real difference.
Saltwater offers the option of Charter Boats or Land Based surf accommodation for our customised Maldives surf trips. We only use boats that we personally have been involved with – no blind on selling. Experienced crews who understand the needs of surfers and operating under our unique direction. Our goal is to continue to build our base of happy return surfers.
We have land based accommodation options on the Southern, Central and Northern atolls of the Maldives.
Guests can stay at these atoll guesthouses as an extension of a surf charter, or as simply a stand alone escape. A stay of this type will really give you some insight into the gentle pace of Maldivian village life, as well as allowing easy access to surf breaks in the vicinity.
